The Saltmarsh - A Fragile World Under Threat

Over the years I have become more and more aware of the value of this extraordinary planet. I have also become more and more aware of how fragile life is: human life, and the life of animals, birds, insects, plants - the whole of the natural world.

The saltmarsh is a habitat local to me, in North Norfolk. It can flood completely on high spring tides, and recede to mud-flat and marshland at low tide. The plants here are resilient to temporary flooding but it is a fragile habitat containing rare and endangered species. Climate change will create rising tides and more extreme storms. This will lead to the destruction of some or all of the saltmarsh, and along with it the birds, invertebrates, and plant life which rely on it for shelter and sustenance.

This series is an attempt to inspire the love and awe the fragile ecosystem of the saltmarsh deserves, and to encourage action to prevent its unnecessary destruction.
